Commissioned Abstract Art for Kittitas Valley Hospital: Waves of Resilience

In 2024, Kittitas Valley Hospital (KVH) entrusted me with a meaningful commission: a custom abstract art piece to reflect their vision for 2025 and beyond. I’m Erin Oostra, a Pacific Northwest artist passionate about creating art that resonates with purpose and place. Known for my contemporary, abstract style, I often draw on the landscapes of Washington State to tell stories of resilience, connection, and natural beauty. In this case, KVH envisioned an artwork that would embody their core values and inspire hope within the walls of their hospital. I’m excited to share Waves of Resilience, the abstract piece I created to capture KVH’s mission and commitment to community.

The Inspiration Behind the Art
For this commission, KVH gave me a powerful set of words as guidance: transformation, bravery, family, stability, teamwork, change, collaboration, openness to change with the tides, one team, honesty, community, healing, leadership, value, bespoke, resilience, evolution, innovation, power, curiosity, kindness, caring, compassion, continuity, community-focused, trust, rural service, and inspiration. These words, along with KVH’s focus on community and healing, became my foundation for creating an abstract piece with an oceanic theme. This theme reflects the unpredictable currents of life—challenges, growth, and unity.

In my interpretation, Waves of Resilience represents the journey through life’s waters, a metaphor for the hospital’s role in guiding its community through the waves, both calm and turbulent.

Abstract Art with a Purpose
With its abstract, oceanic feel, Waves of Resilience symbolizes KVH’s core values through dynamic waves and lines. The piece is built from layers of blues and greens, with a striking wave of silver and white flowing through—a representation of hope and vitality amidst life’s currents. These colors and lines are not only visually calming but also represent strength, compassion, and an unwavering sense of unity.

The silver wave is intentionally bold, symbolizing hope and a vision for a healthy future. It mirrors the strength of KVH’s team as they work together, like a cohesive “one team,” to overcome challenges and create an environment of trust and healing. The intricate silver and white elements connect back to KVH’s emphasis on collaboration, compassion, and stability, reflecting how their team of caregivers bravely supports their rural community every day.

Creating Custom Art for Healthcare and Corporate Spaces
Custom art for corporate spaces or healthcare environments has a unique purpose. At KVH, Waves of Resilience is more than a beautiful piece of art; it’s an inspiring reminder of the hospital’s values and commitment to serving their community. Abstract art, especially in corporate and healing spaces, offers a versatile and powerful tool for engagement. Whether displayed in a hospital, corporate office, or community space, custom art can capture the spirit of an organization, reflecting its mission and inspiring those who walk its halls.

Beyond Painting: Live Event Art and Corporate Commissions
Creating art with impact extends beyond just commissioned pieces for walls. I often work on custom art projects and live painting for corporate events, weddings, and private gatherings. Live painting is an engaging way to bring an event to life, with art created in real time to capture the spirit of the moment. Whether through live event art or corporate wall art commissions, my goal is to create pieces that resonate with viewers on a deep, meaningful level.

Bringing the Pacific Northwest’s Spirit into Every Project
For every custom art commission, I strive to incorporate elements of the Pacific Northwest’s natural beauty and strength. I’m inspired by the resilience of nature, whether it’s the ocean’s rolling waves or the towering mountains, and I infuse these themes into my work. Through commissioned projects like Waves of Resilience, I help businesses and organizations tell their stories through art, transforming spaces into places of connection and inspiration.

Closing Thoughts
Creating Waves of Resilience for Kittitas Valley Hospital was a profound reminder of art’s power to inspire, heal, and connect.
