Summer is fleeting, and so is life itself. That’s why I’m determined to embrace every moment to the fullest. As I finally take a moment to reflect on the highlights of August, it feels like the first time I’ve truly sat down this month! From captivating books and invigorating hikes to witnessing breathtaking sights, August has been a month brimming with unforgettable experiences. Join me as I share the moments that have been inspiring me lately and celebrate the joys of living life to the fullest.
My eight inspirations from August 2024:
1. Awe-struck: Short of breath in Colorado
For me, there's something magical about the Colorado air. The crispness at higher altitudes is invigorating, making each breath feel revitalizing. The scent of aspen and earth connects me to nature, clearing my mind and filling me with a deep sense of peace. In Colorado, the air itself feels like a breath of fresh inspiration, and that’s what I got this month when I took some time to visit my parents in this incredible state!

2. Observation: The Basis of Art (and Life?)
I saw this quote by Frank Weston Benson at an art gallery recently. His belief that "art is essentially a process of observation" really resonates with me. His ability to capture the essence of his subjects, whether in portraits or nature scenes, inspires how I approach my own work. I’m drawn to the way he used observation to bring out both precision and emotion in his art, and it’s a philosophy I strive to incorporate in my own creative journey.
3. Chasing Waterfalls: Oregon’s Treasures
Oregon is a treasure trove of breathtaking waterfalls, with over 200 scattered throughout the state. Each one offers its own unique charm, from the thunderous cascades of Multnomah Falls to the serene beauty of Toketee Falls. I recently hiked to Horsetail Falls on my way home, and it was a short, easy trek that was absolutely beautiful. The hike was perfect for a quick escape into nature, and the sight of the waterfall was a refreshing reward. Exploring Oregon’s waterfalls always captivates me, reminding me of nature’s incredible beauty and diversity.

4. Dress Up: Expression through Clothes + Experiences
Dressing up is a joy for adults, too! Recently, I had a blast on a pirate cruise where everyone went all out with costumes, and it was such a fun experience. I also enjoyed getting into my cowgirl attire for the Ellensburg Rodeo, adding to the excitement of the event. Embracing creative outfits and themed events is a fantastic way to express yourself and have fun, and it reminds me of how important it is to let our personalities shine through our clothes and experiences.

6. Added Pressure: New Shapes
I’m excited to share that I’m working on a new art show, Lunation, featuring captivating moon-themed pieces. This project has pushed me to think outside the box, especially when it comes to experimenting with different canvas sizes. The pressure of creating something unique has sparked a surge of creativity, inspiring me to explore new dimensions and perspectives in my work. It’s amazing how challenges and constraints can actually fuel artistic innovation, leading to unexpected and inspiring results.

7. Chasing Shadows: When Literature Reflects My Heritage
Lynn Austin’s books were a cherished part of my high school summer reads, and recently, I rediscovered her inspiring, faith-filled historical fiction novels. Her book Chasing Shadows, which delves into World War II, particularly resonates with me because it reflects a story strikingly similar to my own family’s past. My family lived in the Netherlands during the war, hiding Jews in their home and fighting in the Dutch resistance army. Austin’s portrayal of these experiences not only captivates me with its historical depth but also deeply connects with my personal history, making her work even more meaningful and impactful.

8. The Ultimate Sacrifice: Living + Dying for Others
Speaking of WWII stories, I watched some great movies this month including Irena’s Vow. This film deeply inspired me with its portrayal of selfless bravery and sacrifice during tough times. The film’s depiction of standing up for what is right, even at great personal risk, reminds me of the extraordinary courage of those who make such sacrifices. It’s a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit and motivates me to reflect on their example in my own life.
Well, those are my inspirations for the month. Catch me later on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, or in person at Nuwave Gallery!
